Rise in greenhouse gas concentrations threatens Paris Agreement temperature targets

Geneva, 25 October 2021 (WMO) - The amount of heat-trapping greenhouse gases in the atmosphere reached another record level last year, with an annual rate of increase above the 2011-2020 average. This trend has continued, according to the Greenhouse Gas Bulletin der World Meteorological Organization (WMO) continued in 2021 .

As long as emissions continue, global temperatures will continue to rise. Because of the long lifetime of CO 2, the temperature levels already observed will continue for several decades, even if emissions are rapidly reduced to net zero. In addition to rising temperatures, this means more weather extremes such as intense heat and rainfall, ice melt, sea level rise, and ocean acidification, accompanied by widespread socioeconomic impacts.
